With the Bears arriving off of a tough loss to the Packers this past weekend, the Chicago team is looking to the longer term. Even with the 21-14 loss versus their archrivals from Wisconsin, the Bears want to secure Lovie Smith as head coach and maintain his contract, in addition to most of his staff. Smith has a record of 63-49 as the head of the Chicago Bears.
The most astonishing fact of this year for the Bears is the small — almost nonexistent — expectations that were held for the team at the beginning of pro football year. Several expected the team would not even get to the playoffs in 2011. Some popular predictions even called for the Chicago football team closing the year with a record of 1-15, or every bit as dismal numbers.
The Bears defense carried the team throughout the year, concentrating on All-Pro defensive end Julius Peppers. Linebacker Brian Urlacher furthermore added to the Bears defense, making the team pretty efficient at closing down opposing football squads. This defense carried the team through the regular season, playoffs, and to within one competition of the 2011 Super Bowl.
This would’ve been the 1st time since 2007 that the Bears had made an appearance at the Super Bowl. In 2007, the Bears were killed in Super Bowl XLI by Peyton Manning and the Colts, whose head coach was Tony Dungy. This was the 1st year that any African-American head coach had achieved the Super Bowl, and both clubs had African American head coaches.
So what is up coming for the Bears? After overcoming all expectations in 2010-2011, the plan is clearly to keep Lovie Smith in his placement as head coach and attempt to build upon this year’s successes. Due to the fact the Bears are the Bears, they may be chronically underranked in preseason football lines. But as this latest year has shown, even the underappreciated Chicago team may have a few surprises for everybody in the seasons ahead.
